Rod Stewart 1973

In 1973, Rod was just getting started. At that time he was the hard-partying front man breaking away from The Faces and becoming his own identity. Little did he know he was getting on a rocket ship of fame that would make him a cultural icon and loved by fans around the world for decades to come. These kind of personalities and talent don’t come around often and his fans are happy that he made it through those crazy years alive and able to still put out great music.

This one was a lot of fun. Originally, I wanted to go crazy with colour with that cheetah pattern suit but I’m glad that I held back. I didn’t want to take away from that great photo, I just wanted to add to it some new energy. I love how this all worked out in the end. Some well placed and appropriate song lyrics fill out the cover and make you look a little deeper.

I always listen the the music of the artist I’m working on and I try not to listen to anything newer than the date of the cover. This helps get me into the groove and space they were in at the time and also helps with getting colours and flow going. It really makes a difference and its interesting how the vibe changes from cover to cover. Personally, I’ve always been drawn to the early 70’s vibe so it wasn’t hard getting connected here. I also got to explore Rod’s early albums as a whole.

This cover is reimagined in acrylic, spray paint, pencil, and ink.
