Kurt Cobain 1994
You got to see this one in real life. Wowzers. Pretty powerful.
Nirvana blew up in late 1991 with the release of Nevermind and the single Smells Like Teen Spirit. I remember seeing that video for the first time living with a bunch of friends and we were all glued to the TV. Whoa, what was this?! It was everything we were looking for at the time. Angry, loud, and oh so cool. And by 1994 he killed himself. They flamed out. Kurt never wanted to be the poster boy of grunge and fought it the whole way and joined the 27 Club with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.
I struggled with what to do with this cover. The image is so powerful and I didn’t want to mess it up. Normally dark, earthy tones are associated with the grunge era but I thought that in true punk rock fashion, Kurt would want the opposite. So I went with as much colour and energy that I could without going overboard. I sometimes add lyrics to these covers for the fans to dig out of the backgrounds but there was only one line that was appropriate for this piece. From one of my favourite Nirvana songs, Come as You Are – “No, I don’t have a gun” was the one. Well, we all know now that Kurt did have a gun…
This would look amazing in your office or man-cave showing your grunge roots and that at one time you had long greasy hair and wore flannel and ripped jeans. Don’t worry, no matter what the kids say, you are still cool.
This cover is reimagined in acrylic, pencil, and ink with a resin finish. Size: 24” x 30” x 2”
