Elvis Presley
It’s Good to be King
The legend. The King of Rock n’ Roll.
I’ve always loved the place he has had in pop culture with his different stages and music to match. There is no doubt he set the world on fire with his music, “sexy dancin’”, and extravagance. When I’m working on these kind of projects, I always dig deep into the music they are producing at the time. The more I listened to Elvis the more I understood his talent. And the more YouTube concert videos I watched of his performances in the 60’s and 70’s up to his death, the more I understood the power he had over an audience. He had the X factor times 10. He was himself on stage when all eyes were on him. Watching documentaries really shows his talent and success but also how much that affected his health and eventually his death. It appeared he had it all but in reality, he didn’t. Unfortunately, that hasn’t changed much with the trappings of fame 40+ years later.
FYI - the TCB reference is a famous one of his and he had that TCB logo with the lightning bolt put on a lot of things. “Taking Care of Business”, a personal motto Presley adopted in the early 1970s. The TCB Band was a group of professional musicians who formed the core rhythm section of Elvis Presley's band from August 1969 until his death in 1977. His security team and friends, the Memphis Mafia, were also known to TCB for their boss.
Fun Fact: Shana and I were married at Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas in 2009, Elvis impersonator and all.
I loved playing with collage and experimenting with texture, spray paint, ink, and paper.
This piece is mixed media and collage with acrylic, spray paint, pencil, and ink.
